VO2 Max Assessment

What Is It?

VO2 Max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilise. It’s one of the most reliable indicators of cardiovascular fitness and long-term health. A higher VO2 Max is linked to improved energy levels and endurance and a lower risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.

Who Is It For?

Our VO2 Max test using the Seismofit® System is ideal for health-conscious individuals, moderately active adults, and those looking to prevent disease or improve vitality without strenuous exercise. Whether you’re beginning a wellness journey, recovering from illness, or simply curious about your fitness baseline, this test provides powerful insights in a safe, accessible way.

How Does It Work?

Unlike conventional VO2 Max tests that require intense physical effort, Seismofit® is a certified medical device that uses pulse wave and heart rate variability analysis to estimate your VO2 Max in just a few minutes, comfortably seated and fully clothed.

Validated through double-blind clinical studies, Seismofit® demonstrates a 5–8% deviation from traditional exercise testing, offering a scientifically proven and highly accurate alternative.

At Total Health Now, our VO2 max testing service is a powerful way to assess cardiovascular endurance and aerobic efficiency. This state-of-the-art test reveals how well your body utilises oxygen during intense exercise, helping you personalise your fitness strategy for better stamina, performance, and long-term health. Whether you’re a high-level athlete or improving general fitness, our expert team provides clear results and tailored recommendations to support your goals. The insights gained can guide training intensity, improve recovery, and significantly reduce the risk of chronic illness—all as part of our broader commitment to your health and wellbeing.

For more insight, here is a short BBC video in which presenter Lara Lewington compares the Seismofit VO? Max assessment with a traditional exercise-based test. It offers a helpful comparison of both methods and demonstrates the convenience and effectiveness of Seismofit:

VO2 max reflects how efficiently your heart, lungs, and muscles use oxygen during intense exercise—and is one of the most accurate indicators of aerobic fitness and long-term health. A higher VO2 max means greater endurance, better oxygen delivery, and improved performance in both daily activities and athletic pursuits.

While the data from fitness trackers like Garmin can be confusing, understanding your VO2 max is vital. It offers meaningful insight into cardiovascular health and helps you benchmark your fitness against others in your age and gender group.

Our team will interpret your results clearly, helping you understand what your VO2 max means, how you compare, and what steps you can take to improve it—empowering you to make informed, targeted improvements to your fitness and wellbeing.

No intense exercise is required for this test. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, large meals, and strenuous activity for at least 2–3 hours before your appointment.

On the day, we’ll begin by entering your basic details into the Seismofit® app. You’ll then lie down while a small sensor is placed on your chest. In just  three minutes, it records your heart’s vibrations using advanced seismocardiography.

Your results are processed immediately, and our team will explain what your VO2 max score means for your fitness, health, and training. You’ll also receive personalised recommendations and the option for follow-up sessions to track progress.

We use the advanced Seismofit® System Class IIa medical device under EU MDR to deliver accurate, non-invasive VO2 max testing. This innovative approach eliminates the need for strenuous exercise while providing a precise evaluation of cardiovascular fitness.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

  1. Welcome & Briefing
On arrival, our trained staff will explain the procedure and answer any questions. You’ll be made comfortable in a resting position—no physical exertion is required.

  2. Device Setup
A compact Seismofit® sensor (3?×?5?×?1.5?cm; <25g) is attached to a small adhesive patch placed on the lower part of your sternum. It captures subtle chest vibrations generated by your heartbeat.

  3. Input of Personal Data
Your height, weight, age, and gender are entered into the Seismofit® app to ensure an accurate, individualised analysis.

  4. Recording (Approx. 3 min)
While you remain relaxed, the device records your cardiac vibrations. Data is transmitted via Bluetooth® Low Energy to a mobile device.

  5. Instant Cloud-Based Analysis
Your signal is securely transmitted to Microsoft Azure servers, where a cloud-based algorithm analyses the data. Within seconds, a precise VO2 max result is delivered.

  6. Review & Consultation
A specialist will clearly explain your results and provide practical, personalised guidance to help you improve your fitness and cardiovascular health.

  1. How is this VO2 Max test different from the one done with the Seismofit® System?
We use the Seismofit® System, a certified medical device that offers a non-exercise VO2 Max assessment based on pulse wave and heart rate analysis. It’s quick, comfortable, and doesn’t require physical exertion, making it ideal for the general population, wellness clients, and moderately active individuals. Validated through double-blind studies, it delivers accurate results within 5–8% of traditional exercise-based tests. It’s an excellent screening tool, and if high-performance training is the goal, further testing can be considered.
  2. Who can benefit from a VO2 Max test?
Anyone interested in improving their fitness, endurance, or overall health can benefit—whether you’re an athlete, a regular exerciser, or managing chronic conditions. It helps personalise your training intensity and monitor progress safely and effectively.
  3. What do I receive after the test?
You’ll receive a detailed personalised report outlining your VO2 Max, aerobic zones, and tailored recommendations. The report will clearly explain what options and strategies may be most effective for you individually to improve your fitness, endurance, and overall health outcomes.
  4. Is it safe for everyone?
Yes, but it’s important to ensure suitability. We’ll review your health history beforehand. The test is conducted by trained professionals and adjusted to your fitness level to ensure safety and accuracy.
  5. How often should I take a VO2 Max test?
We recommend reassessing every 3–6 months if you’re actively working towards fitness goals or tracking changes related to a health programme. It helps monitor improvements and refine your training or lifestyle strategies.

The team at Total Health Now are simply wonderful. Kostas, invited me along to measure my VO2 max, resting heart rate. From entering his therapy room, I was made to feel comfortable from the get go, he explained every device and reading to me, and in ways that were easy to understand. His passion for his art is incredible. I wouldn’t hesitate in using the clinic again. Thank you.
